The Barrington High School girls tennis team came within one match of a perfect season.
The Eagles, undefeated in the regular season, lost to LaSalle Academy 4-2 in the Division I State Championship Finals at Slater Park on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Barrington won the first and third doubles matches, but dropped the second doubles match and three out of the four singles matches. Despite the loss, BHS Coach Polly Danyla said she was extremely proud of her team.
“I am so grateful to these 15 young ladies who trained so hard in the gym and on the courts this season,” Danyla said. “They showed up every day ready to play. They always held their heads high, showing kindness and sportsmanship on and off the courts.”
Barrington, which reached the finals with a semifinals win over East Greenwich, started the championship match with a win at third doubles. Barrington High School’s Ella Schweier and Mira Scheiner dominated their LaSalle counterparts en route to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Meanwhile, Barrington’s number one doubles team of Addy Friedman and Jasmine Malik powered to the Eagles’ second team point. Friedman and Malik won their first set, 6-2, lost the second 4-6, and then won the third, 6-2. Friedman and Malik finished the season undefeated.
“… quite a big accomplishment and something to be very proud of,” said Danyla.
The Rams evened the team score with wins at number three and four singles. Anna Pani lost her match at third singles, 1-6, 1-6, while Charlotte Byon battled hard at number four singles but eventually lost, 4-6, 4-6.
LaSalle built a 3-2 lead when Barrington’s Jillian Frechette and Carla Chen lost the second doubles match, 4-6, 3-6.
LaSalle clinched the title with a win at second singles. Barrington’s Sadie Spector lost the first set 4-6, and then forced a tie-breaker in the second. She dropped the back-and-forth tiebreaker 8-10. Ava Koczera-Kasem’s match at number one singles was suspended at that point, because LaSalle had the necessary team points.
Danyla wanted to thank her team for a stellar season: “Thank you to this amazing team who worked so hard!” She said.
