Audubon leading bird walks at two locations

Two Audubon wildlife refuges are hosting special birding programs this weekend. The first is Friday night at Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk. The second is Saturday morning at Mount Hope Farm in Bristol.

Woodcocks and Wine
Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk, Mass.

April 18; 6-8 p.m.

Spring is in the air and so are the Woodcocks as they embark on their unique and amazing courtship ritual. Join Audubon for a wine tasting and presentation about this unusual and adorable bird. Afterwards, set out on a walk to try and catch a glimpse of the Woodcock "sky dance" at dusk. Participants must be age 21 and up.

Fee: $18/member; $22/non-member. Ages: 21 and up. Register online through the events calendar at asri.org/calendar.

 

Bird Walk at Mount Hope Farm
Mount Hope Farm, Bristol, R.I.

April 19; 8-9:30 a.m.

Join Lauren Parmelee, Audubon senior director of education, for a morning bird walk at the Mount Hope Farm in Bristol. Stroll along the paved trail, stopping at the pond, field, and shore of the Bay. Look for early migrating songbirds, as well as water birds in the pond and bay. Bring binoculars and wear sturdy walking shoes. Extra binoculars will be available.

Advance registration required. Walk is weather dependent.  

Fee: $5/member, $7/non-member. Ages: 12 and up. Register online through the events calendar at asri.org/calendar.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
