Boys upset Classical; girls run past South Kingstown

The Barrington High School boys and girls indoor track teams won Class B Championships this weekend, and in both meets, the Eagles used total team efforts to power past the competition.

The BHS boys team upset heavily-favored Classical, 101-100, and the rest of the Class B field. Barrington Coach Bill Barrass was very pleased with his team’s effort.

“The best part about today was that we did it as a team,” Coach Barrass wrote in an email.

The BHS girls team outscored second place South Kingstown, 93-79, and pulled away from the rest of the competition.

“This was a true team effort where we had finalists in every event we competed in and scored points in 12 out of 14 events contested,” wrote first-year BHS girls coach Ed Roskiewicz.

Boys championship

Barrington High School entered the Class B Championship meet as 29-point underdogs to Classical, which had won the three previous Class B championships. But nearly a dozen BHS athletes scored key points and helped the Eagles upset the Purple by one point.

Jackson Montour, Charlie Stockwell, Adam Copple and Holden Vaughan teamed up to win the 4x800-meter relay race, and Asher Robbins won the weight throw. The 4x400-meter relay team of Nico Arce, Andrew Blazewicz, Will Sanchez and Vaughan won a Class B title also.

Jackson Duffy, Aaron Brady, Blazewicz and Sanchez ran to a second-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay race, and Sanchez finished second in the long jump and was fourth in the 300. In fact, Sanchez helped score 30 points for the Eagles.

“These multiple events can be very tough, and Will really rose to the occasion today for the team!” Coach Barrass wrote.

Duffy and Eli Terrell finished second and third, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdles, while Thomas McAdams and Brady finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 55-meter dash. Arce was third in the 600-meter race, Tom Rocha was third in the shot put, and McAdams tied for third in high jump. Liam Capozza was third in the weight throw.

Coach Barrass thanked his entire team for the work they put in, and made a special point to credit Aaron Brady.

“Also, as one of our captains Aaron was the brains behind a lot of the decisions made about our entries today for sprinter-jumpers. They worked!” Coach Barrass wrote.

“This has been a hard season because of what is going on in the world, and just to qualify for this meet and be there to support the team, your school, and the community is a great accomplishment. Thank you!”

Girls championship

Barrington’s 4x800-meter relay team of Olivia Johnson, Maria Gunness, Reilly Curran and Kyle Keough led the way for the Eagles with a first place finish at the Class B Championship.

Megan Zitzmann finished in second place in the 3,000-meter race and there 1,000-meter event, while Mackenzie Stephens finished second in the 20-pound weight throw. Tess Gagliano was second in the 600-meter race and in the 1,500, and ran a leg of the second-place 4x400-meter relay team. She partnered with her sister, Violet Gagliano, and Marie Choi-Shattle, and Lindsay Turgeon.

Keough was third in the 1,000, while Violet and Tess Gagliano, and Courtney Brady and Sophia Ford finished third in the 4x200.

Fourth place finishers included Violet Gagliano in the 300-meter race, Sasha Westrick in the weight throw, Grace Saal in the 55-meter hurdles, and Ashleigh Wallen in the high jump.

“The athletes came to the track meet ready to compete which is illustrated by the fact that we had over 20 athletes record seasonal or personal bests during the day,” wrote Coach Roskiewicz.
