Barrington boys soccer takes the field with deep roster

Eagles drop opener to Hendricken, 4-0

The Barrington High School boys soccer team graduated 12 seniors from last year’s squad, but entered the current season with a very deep roster.

“Our biggest strength is our depth,” said Barrington Coach Don Denham.

The coach said there might be a slight drop-off when he substitutes players into the games for the starters, but it’s not a big change.

“I’m hoping they will all get significant time,” Denham said.

Barrington, which lost to LaSalle 8-0 in the semifinals of last year’s playoffs, entered this season with 10 seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen on the varsity roster. Junior Iain DeBoth, a forward, and senior Keegan Gasbarro, a defense/midfielder, started the season as the captains.

“They’re both very mature,” Denham said.

Denham is expecting significant contributions from the upperclassmen, and is excited to see how freshman Evan Memoli responds to the varsity competition.

“He’s phenomenal,” Denham said.

Barrington opened the preseason with some scrimmages, including one against Central Falls and another against Dartmouth (Mass.) High School. Denham said his Eagles played well enough against CF, but showed vast improvement in a 3-1 win over Dartmouth.

“We played really well,” he said. “We’re trying a new system… every team is different from year to year.”

Following is the BHS varsity roster:

• Seniors: Keegan Gasbarro (defense/midfield), Leo Caldarella (defense/midfield), Jack Adams (defense/midfield), Julian Shireman (forward/goalie), Ben McDermott (midfield), Liam O’Neal (defense), Max Sylvester (midfield/defense), Corbin Vaughan (midfield), Aidan Zabriskie (defense), and Brian Grenier (midfield/forward)

• Juniors: Iain DeBoth (forward), Ethan Knight (midfield), Hayden Knight (defense), Doug Languirand (defense), and Yanni Tapinos (midfield/defense)

• Sophomores: Alex Bejger (defense/midfield), Aiden Memoli (midfield/defense), Owen Pfeffer (forward/midfield), and Jameson Hogan-Shaw (goalie)

• Freshmen: Evan Memoli (forward/midfield), Liam Helfich (goalie)

League opener

Barrington began the season with a game against Bishop Hendricken at Victory Field on Thursday, Sept. 8. The Eagles lost, 4-0. Barrington lost to Central 1-0 on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, with a game at Classical at 5:30 p.m.
