The team of Katie Byon and Ava Kaczera-Kasem brought home the state doubles championship last weekend, defeating a team from LaSalle Academy in the finals. 

Byon and Kaczera-Kasem entered the finals as the underdog, and they lost the first set 2-6. But the Barrington team rebounded to win the second and third sets, 6-1 and 6-3, respectively. 

Barrington’s second doubles team of Julia Stanchina and Mira Cheng reached the quarterfinals of the state doubles tournament. Stanchina and Cheng won their first round match, but lost in three sets in the quarterfinals. 

In the singles tournament, Barrington’s Kate Robertson made an impressive run to the state semifinals. Barrington High School Coach Betsy Brenner said Kate was the first Barrington girl in many years to get past the quarterfinals in the state tournament. 

“Kate Robertson proved she is the third best player in the state, reaching the semifinals before being defeated by the eventual winner, LaSalle’s top player, Erin McCusker,” Coach Brenner said. 

Marie Chanfrau also earned a spot in the state tournament, but had to withdraw because of a back injury.

Team play

Barrington High School currently stands in third place in Division One, boasting a 9-4 record. 

On Monday, Oct. 11, the Eagles traveled to Wheeler and returned with a 6-1 win. On Tuesday, Oct. 12, Barrington hosted Moses Brown and topped the Quakers 5-2. On Wednesday, Oct. 13, Barrington lost to East Greenwich 3-4. But on Thursday, the Eagles bounced back with a 7-0 win over North Kingstown. 

“I am especially proud of the girls because we have faced adversity this season with illness and injury necessitating many changes in the line up,” Coach Brenner said. “The girls have stepped up and continued our winning ways despite missing key players in several of our matches.”

Barrington was slated to finish regular season play this week and enter the playoffs the week following.
