Barrington pair defeats LaSalle duo in tournament finals

Lauren Jay and Sonya Pareek can proudly say they are the number one doubles team in the state this fall.

Lauren and Sonya defeated a team from LaSalle Academy in the RI State Tennis Doubles Tournament at Wheeler School's property in Seekonk, Mass. last weekend. Lauren, a senior, and Sonya, a freshman, lost the first set 4-6, but battled back to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-1.

Barrington High School Coach Betsy Brenner said Lauren and Sonya appeared to be a bit nervous during the first set, but settled down nicely and won some critical points during the second set. The local girls cruised to victory in the third set.

"I was just so proud of how hard they fought," said Coach Brenner.

It was the second straight three-set victory for Lauren and Sonya, who defeated the top doubles team from Moses Brown in the semifinals.

It was nearly an all-Barrington finals in the RI State Tennis Doubles Tournament, as Lauren's and Sonya's teammates, Eve Stockwell and Hailey Walter, came up just short in their semifinals match against the same LaSalle pair that Lauren and Sonya defeated.

In the state singles tournament, Barrington's Caroline Maher, Kate Robertson and Beth Wang each won their first round matches, before being eliminated in the round of 16.

Big week for BHS tennis

Barrington was preparing for an important week of tennis on Monday, Oct. 21.

The team entered the final match of the season with a 12-0 record — on Tuesday, the Eagles were scheduled to play against undefeated LaSalle in Providence.

"We've never gone into the last match of the season undefeated," said Coach Brenner, who has been leading Eagles teams for the last 11 years.

Coach Brenner said LaSalle has a very good team this year, as they do most years, but the Barrington coach believes Barrington could be poised to defeat the Rams.

"They have several super-strong players," Coach Brenner said. "But I don't think they have the depth."

Barrington will face a quick turnaround following Tuesday's regular season, as the Division I team playoffs are set to begin on Wednesday afternoon. Barrington will host a first round playoff match at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Coach Brenner said she is reminding her team to take it one match at a time and not look past that day's opponent.

"I'm just thrilled to have this opportunity," she said.
