Barrington is looking for nine volunteers to populate the newly-formed Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
The Barrington Town Council approved the creation of the BPAC during its meeting earlier this month. The new committee is expected to serve a number of functions — its charge is to “advise the town administration, Planning Board and Town Council on bicycle and pedestrian projects, plans and policies, fostering a transparent process for decisions regarding bicycles and pedestrians.”
The Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee will provide input to the town on major projects, including state projects — Complete Streets Plan implementation, bridge projects, off-road bicycle and pedestrian facilities, street repaving and comprehensive plan updates.
One of its immediate roles will be working with a consultant in helping to develop a Complete Streets strategy for improvements to Lincoln Avenue between Washington Road and County Road.
BPAC is also tasked with making recommendations on subdivision and land development proposals that are being reviewed by the Planning Board and Technical Review Committee, and the committee will be evaluating how projects comply with the town’s Complete Streets plan.
The vacancies are divided into three categories:
• Three openings for people with an interest or expertise in bicycling;
• Three openings for people with an interest or expertise in pedestrian facilities;
• Three openings for people with a general interest in pedestrian and bicycling planning.
Applications can be obtained through the town’s website at www.barrington.ri.gov, at the town clerk's office at the town hall, or at the library.
Openings on other boards
A number of boards and commissions in town are also looking for volunteers. There are currently vacancies on the Board of Assessment Review, Board of Canvassers, Board of Library Trustees, Building Board of Review, DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Committee, Housing Board of Trustees, Planning Board, Senior Services Advisory Board, and the Zoning Board of Review. Some of the boards have multiple vacancies, such as the Housing Board, which is looking to fill five openings, and the Planning Board, which has two openings. Residents can download an application at www.barrington.ri.gov or stop by the town clerk’s office at the town hall, or pick one up at the library.
