Barrington girls win again after shut-down defensive effort

Eagles roll to 6-2 record; Patriots slip to 4-2

An impressive defensive effort paced the Barrington High School girls basketball team to a 16-point victory over Portsmouth on Tuesday night, Jan. 14. 

The Eagles, who run a pressing defense, held the Patriots to one field goal for the entire second half. Barrington won 43-27. 

Faith Van Ness led the Eagles’ offense — the junior guard scored 16 points. Barrington sophomore Maggie Ornstedt chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds. 

Gyselle Mairs and Annie Hurd each scored seven points to lead the Patriots.

Barrington High School improved to 6-2 while Portsmouth dropped to 4-2.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
