Barrington High School celebrated more than a dozen of its student-athletes.

In a special event on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 13, the high school hosted a Collegiate National Letter of Intent signing event. Nine BHS student-athletes attended the event and signed their letters. Another six student-athletes were unable to make it.

Barrington High School Director of Athletics and Student Activities George Finn announced each of the students as they signed their letters. Finn said he was very proud of all the students.

“It’s evolved over the years, whereas it was specifically Division I (before), now it’s all Division I, II and III,” Finn said. “More kids are making decisions earlier than they ever have.”

This year’s list of Barrington High School students who signed letters of intent touches on a variety of sports. Three students signed for soccer, two signed for baseball, two others signed for volleyball, and two others signed for lacrosse. Other signings were for golf, swim, track and field, wrestling, softball and rowing.

Keith Hartman signed a letter of intent to swim at Middlebury College.

“It kind of checked all the boxes,” Hartman said of Middlebury. “I was looking to go to a good school academically, so other than Middlebury I went on visits to Bowdoin, Swarthmore, Hamilton and Wesleyan. I knew all those are good schools so it came down to kind of the vibe of each, where I could see myself. Middlebury was my last visit and I kind of knew after that.”

Hartman said he really enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the letter of intent signing experience with his classmates.

“It’s really cool. I’m friends with a lot of them,” he said. “I’m really close to Gianna. It’s really fun to share the experience with other people, people who I’ve been friends with for a while.”

Gianna Vigliotti, who signed a letter of intent to row at the University of Virginia, also appreciated sharing the special event with classmates.

“Just seeing everyone that has worked so hard and even though I don’t row with a lot of these people I think their determination and their ability to step up and take on challenges has been super inspiring to me,” Vigliotti said. “And I think seeing everyone come together and be able to sign together on the same day has been incredible.”

Vigliotti said her decision to attend the University of Virginia became very clear after her visit to the school.

“I was looking at Duke. I was looking at UNC-Chapel Hill. UVA, as soon as I went there I knew it was the place for me,” Vigliotti said. “I fell in love with the campus. The team was just so unifying. And I just felt like I was already a part of the team before signing. It was incredible.”

Miles Fontaine signed his letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Maine.

“It’s definitely an honor. I’ve worked my butt off to get here. I’m just happy it’s come to fruition,” he said. “Just seeing the kids I grew up with and the accomplishments they have, it’s been an honor and I’m super excited for everyone.”
