Barrington hosts debate state championship tournament

The Barrington High School debate team finished its season with a stellar performance at the state championship tournament. 

Barrington, which hosted states, had an especially strong showing with its novice team. Halyna Chapman won first place as speaker, and the team of Chapman and Henry Humphries brought home the award for number one novice team.

The Barrington High School varsity debaters were also recognized for their performance at the state championship tournament. Barrington had four varsity teams place in the top-10, and three individual speakers in the top-10. 

BHS varsity individuals

• Third place: Kendal Bazerman

• Fifth place: Chelsea Duncan

• 10th place: Liam O’Neal

BHS varsity teams

• Third place: Chelsea Duncan and Kate Mellen

• Third place: Audrey Adams and Kendall Bazerman

• Eighth place: Dawen Cheng and CC West

• Ninth place: Frannie Johnson and Amelia Taylor

BHS novice individuals

• First place: Halyna Chapman

• Fourth place: Gaige Battersby

• Fifth place: Iris Yang

• Sixth place: Eva Desjarlais

• Seventh place: Eilidh Thomson

• 10th place: Alexandra Ford

• 14th place: Echo Dhillon

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
