Mike Dolan celebrates hole-in-one on par 4

Gary Player could not do it.

Jack Nicklaus could not do it.

And Rory McIlroy could not do it.

But on Saturday afternoon, Barrington resident Mike Dolan did it — hitting a hole-in-one on a par 4 hole at Rhode Island Country Club.

Mr. Dolan was finishing up a round of golf with his good friends Brad Dimeo, Mike Mahoney and Steve Tortolani when, on the 18th hole, he knocked his tee shot into the cup.

Mr. Dolan was quick to add that there's a small asterisk next to the accomplishment — normally the par 4 18th hole plays longer than 350 yards, but currently all the tee boxes are being re-sodded. The new, temporary tee box on 18 shortens the hole to about 250 or 255 yards. However, the hole still plays uphill and poses a pretty good challenge to golfers.

"I saw it hit about five yards in front of the green," Mr. Dolan said of his tee shot.

But the group lost sight of the ball as it rolled onto the green. Mr. Dolan said one of the golfers in his group jumped into a cart and raced toward the green immediately. Once there he realized Mr. Dolan's tee shot had dropped into the cup.

"It was very, very exciting," Mr. Dolan said.

Quickly news of the accomplishment spread throughout the club. Mr. Dolan said it was his first hole-in-one and capped a great day of golf with his friends.

"It was such a beautiful day," he said. "With all my best friends … not a bad day at all."

Mr. Dolan said his friends have been teasing him a bit following the shot, saying that none of the professionals to play Rhode Island Country Club for the CVS Charity Classic have been able to accomplish what he did on the 18th hole.
