Barrington native Anders Weiss has earned a second trip to the Olympics.

Mr. Weiss, who graduated from Barrington High School in 2011, was recently named to the U.S. Olympic Men’s Four boat. At the 2016 Olympic Games, he competed in pairs rowing for the U.S.

“It means an incredible amount to me,” Mr. Weiss wrote in an email to the Times. “It shows that the entire training cycle I have improved and that the work that has gone into this pursuit has not been for naught.”

Mr. Weiss started rowing as a sophomore at Barrington High School — his sister began rowing at Brown University as a walk-on and suggested he try the sport. Mr. Weiss took quickly to it, racing and training with the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence. 

He worked hard, and in 2016 landed a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. He placed 11th at the Olympics and also finished 11th at the 2017 World Rowing Championships. 

Mr. Weiss encourages young rowers to work hard and strong results will follow.

“I was told in 2016 I wasn’t going to make the team by people I respected in the sport,” Mr. Weiss wrote. “The hardest part was that when they told me this, I wasn’t good enough. To make the Olympics, you have to go above and beyond what people expect of you. Work hard, work smart, and when you do that you will surprise yourself and others at the level of excellence you can achieve.”

The Tokyo Olympic Games begin July 23.
