Locals compete in fencing tournament
Two Barrington fencers performed well at the second North American Cup fencing tournament of 2021 in Richmond, Va. Emma Mueller competed in Y-14 Women’s Epee, an event restricted to girls aged 14 or younger. In the initial pool round, Emma won four of six bouts. She was rated 12th of 61 total fencers at the end of this round. She breezed through her first direct elimination bout with a score of 15 to 7 and was not closely challenged in her next two DE rounds, but was stopped in the quarterfinals, ultimately finishing in sixth place. Emma was rewarded with both a medal and a new national rating of “C.” Julia Douglas fenced in the Cadet Women’s Epee, an event for fencers aged 17 or younger. Lia swept her pool with six wins and no losses, emerging from this round in sixth place out of 121 total fencers. She had a first round bye thanks to her success in pools and won two DE’s before her run was ended. She placed ninth overall, renewing her “B” rating with the high level victory.
Grant brings the gift of music to local school
A grant from the Barrington Education Foundation recently brought 50 ukuleles to Hampden Meadows School. The ukuleles allow the fourth- and fifth-graders an opportunity to experience a “developmentally appropriate music program while practicing the safety measures of being in their own classroom pods.” Officials from Barrington Education Foundation were very happy to be able to fill the grant request.
