Ruby Ciummo crushed two home runs and Maya Etheridge blasted a homer as well, as the Barrington High School softball team powered to a 16-1 victory over Cranston East on Friday, April 4.

Ciummo has hit three home runs in three games, while Etheridge has two in three games. Etheridge also crushed a homer in the Eagles’ 9-7 loss to Toll Gate on Wednesday, April 2.

Against Cranston East, Barrington players up and down the lineup pounded the ball for hits. In addition to Ciummo and Etheridge, Cora Floriani and Arianna Renzi also had strong offensive games. Floriani was 3-for-3, while Renzi was 2-for-3.

“I think we’ve improved a lot,” said Barrington Coach Sandy Gorham. “We have a much stronger lineup.”

Kendall Fisher pitched for Barrington, and helped herself with strong plate appearances.

“She’s hitting the ball really well,” Gorham said.

Toll Gate game

The Eagles and Titans were tied up 7-7 heading into the sixth inning. Gorham said Toll Gate scored two runs with two outs and held off Barrington in the bottom of the inning.

“They got a gapper and drove in a couple of runs late,” Gorham said.

The coach said his defense played well, especially the Eagles’ infield.

Wednesday game

Barrington is scheduled to host Portsmouth on Wednesday afternoon, April 9. The Eagles are 2-1 so far this season while Portsmouth is 2-0, having celebrated lopsided wins over South Kingstown and Mt. Hope.

Gorham said he is eager to see how his team responds to some very tough competition in Portsmouth.

“In order to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best,” he said. “We’ll see how we measure up.”

The game starts at 4:15 p.m.
