Coach: ‘Maya Etheridge hit a ball that you could hang your clothes on’

The Barrington High School softball team improved to 5-2 last week.

The Eagles defeated Mt. Hope 18-1, lost to Westerly 15-0, and then defeated Lincoln 12-2.

Barrington Coach Sandy Gorham said Westerly is a very talented team — the Bulldogs have a dominant pitcher and “can hit the heck out of the ball.”

“The speed of game, we were just a fraction behind,” Gorham said. “They took the extra base. If you give an extra inch, they’ll take a yard.”

But Barrington bounced back for a key win over Lincoln. Gorham said he was very pleased with the effort his team put forth.

“Real happy, because Lincoln is a good, solid program,” he said. “I was really proud of our girls, the way they came out.

“This was the only time in all my years coaching … that we had three home runs in one game.”

Maya Etheridge led the charge for Barrington. The Eagles slugger bashed a line-shot over the centerfield fence that put Barrington on the scoreboard and tied the game at 2-2.

“Maya Etheridge hit a ball that you could hang your clothes on. It was a line,” Gorham said.

Ruby Ciummo ripped a three-run homer next.

“That was a moon-shot,” Gorham said.

And Barrington High School freshman Grace Fontaine capped the home run spree with her first of the season.

Gorham also praised Ace McCoy — the Eagles’ lead-off hitter went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two singles. “And she’s really fun to watch on the base-path,” Gorham said. “Instinctive. It’s a tough thing to teach.”

Cora Floriani also played well for Barrington. The freshman was 2-for-2 with two walks.

Kendall Fisher shined on the mound and at the plate — the senior pitched a complete game victory for Barrington and also broke the game open with a bases-loaded hit.

“The kids played real well. It was a good bounce-back win,” Gorham said.

The Eagles crushed Mt. Hope 18-1 earlier in the week. Gorham said Mt. Hope’s pitcher struggled a bit. He added that Alyssa Conaty, Arianna Renzi and Gianna Bruccato played well for Barrington.

The Eagles play Scituate and Tiverton this week.
