The Barrington High School girls volleyball team will face off against Middletown for the Division II State Championship on Sunday, Nov. 10 at Rhode Island College.
The Eagles defeated North Smithfield, 3-0, in the semifinals on Thursday night. Barrington won 25-19, 25-11, 25-21.
Emma McCrann and Sophia Denham led the way for the Eagles. McCrann had nine kills, five aces and six digs, while Denham tallied five kills and 13 assists.
Barrington Coach Ron Enos said his team did a nice job of executing against North Smithfield.
“We played our game,” he said.
The Eagles will square off against the Islanders in the state finals. Middletown defeated Mt. Hope in the other semifinal match.
“They’re a good team,” Enos said. “It’s going to be a battle.”
Enos said the Eagles and Islanders are both strong serving teams — “They definitely challenge you from the service line,” he said, adding they also have good outside hitters and pass the ball well.
Enos said Barrington is bracing for a tough test on Sunday and is prepared for a back-and-forth contest.
“You just have to keep battling,” he said.
Middletown finished the regular season in third place overall, trailing Barrington in first and Mt. Hope in second. The Eagles hosted the Islanders for a match late in the regular season. Barrington prevailed in five sets — 25-23, 17-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9.
Enos said his entire team has been working hard all season and shown steady improvement. He praised the play of setters Melissa Freshman and Denham. “They’re really doing a nice job,” he said.
He also mentioned McCrann, Morgan Martin and Lily Floriani.
“They’ve really done a nice job defensively. And when Emma comes around to the front court, she’s probably our most efficient hitter,” Enos said.
The BHS coach said his team is looking forward to Sunday’s match. He is also trying to remind himself and his players to live in the moment and enjoy the experience.
Sunday’s championship match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
