Bay View hosts state’s first all-female chess tournament

Posted

In a milestone for the chess community and young female players, St. Mary Academy – Bay View recently hosted Rhode Island’s first ever All-Girls & Women’s Chess Championship Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 11.

According to a press release from Bay View, the historic event aimed to “empower and encourage young girls to engage in chess, gain confidence, build community and foster skills such as strategic thinking, problem-solving and teamwork.” Three championship series featured competitive matches for K-12 participants.

“In the US Chess Federation, only 13% of players are women,” the release continued. “Currently in the New England Chess community there has been a big push for growing women's chess. By hosting the first ever All-Girls and Women Chess Championship Tournament, Bay View is helping work towards the goal of growing women's chess.”

The tournament took place in the library at Mercy Hall at the school’s East Providence campus.
