The Barrington High School boys basketball team opened its regular season with a 52-47 win over Providence Country Day on Saturday, Jan. 23. The Eagles trailed by 14 points at halftime (27-13) before their offense came alive. Ethan Coutu and Matt Raffa led Barrington in scoring, each finishing with 11 points. Brigham Dunphy and Connor Sullivan pitched in with six points each and Cole Reed dropped in four points.
Barrington also played a non-league game against Mt. Hope on Monday night. The Eagles defeated the Huskies 77-40. Raffa led Barrington with 20 points, followed by Sullivan’s 16 and Ben Proulx’s 15.
Girls ice hockey
The East Bay Co-op girls ice hockey team, led by Kat Barker’s four goals, skated past the Smithfield-Coventry-Moses Brown Co-op team 6-5 in its season-opener on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Barker opened the scoring with a goal (Peyton Whittet and Marissa Levreault assists) in the first period and made it 2-0 on a power-play goal (Whittet assist) at the start of the second period. Whittet expanded the Eagles’ lead to 3-0 with a goal (Barker assist) at the 10:09 mark of the second period. Whittet netted her second goal (Barker assist) at 7:03 in the second.
Smithfield scored its first goal at 6:46 in the second, but Barker scored her third goal (unassisted) about 30 seconds later.
The Eagles’ commanding 5-1 lead was short-lived, however, as the Smithfield Co-op team scored two more goals to close out the second period.
Barker scored again at the start of the third period and the Eagles held on for a 6-5 win. Sara Turillo stopped 20 shots in net for East Bay.
Girls indoor track
The Barrington High School girls indoor track team, led by its new coach Ed Roskiewicz, celebrated a number of first place finishes at the season-opening dual meet on Saturday.
Sasha Westrick finished first in the weight throw, while Tess Gagliano clocked the fastest time in the 300-meter race. Olivia Johnson ran to a first place finish in the 3,000-meter race, and the quartet of Violet Gagliano, Tess Gagliano, Danielle Hood and Marie Choi-Schattle won the 4x400-meter relay.
Mackenzie Stephens finished second in the weight throw; Lindsay Turgeon was second in the 1,000-meter race; Meghan Zitzmann finished second in the 1,500; and Kyle Keogh was second in the 3,000.
Meghan Coyne was third in the weight throw; Violet Gagliano was third in the 300; and Virginia Sanderson was third in 3,000.
There are no team scores in dual meets this season.
Boys indoor track
The Eagles opened their season with a dual meet on Sunday against Hendricken. And while there are no team scores in dual meets this season, Barrington runners performed well.
Barrington’s 4x400-meter relay team (Will Sanchez, Holden Vaughan, Andrew Blazewicz, and Nico Arce) won its event with a time 3:47.47.
Jackson Duffy finished second in the 55-meter hurdles, and Arce was second in the 600-meter race. Duffy and Arce partnered with Aaron Brady and Blazewicz to finish second in the 4x200-meter race.
Sanchez finished third in the long jump, and Blazewicz and Thomas McAdams tied for third in the high jump. Asher Robbins was third in the weight throw and Vaughan was third in the 3,000.
