The Town of Bristol hosted its 32nd coastal clean-up event on Saturday, May 1, and had about 120 very passionate volunteers turn out to support the effort.
“We were pleasantly surprised by how many participated during these tough times — they came out in full force, masked, socially distancing and ready to get to work,” said Chelsey Barton-Karnes, Coastal Clean Up 2021 chairperson. Groups of folks from The Hopeworth Association, Kickemuit Middle School National Junior Honor Society, Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter, The Democratic Town Committee, THRIVE Outside, Mt. Hope Farm 4-H Club, The Bristol Conservation Committee, Bayside FC ’09 Girls Premier Soccer and Mt. Hope S.T.A.N.D. joined individual residents for the day’s events.
The Cleanup Committee welcomed volunteers in front of the Department of Public Works building with grab-and-go meals, gloves and supplies provided with grant funding from The Recycling Partnership and The Coca Cola Foundation.
Throughout the day, teams of volunteers cleared a total of 2,700 pounds of garbage, compost, recyclable materials, furniture and tires from 32 locations throughout the town. Ms. Barton-Karnes said; “It was exciting seeing so many young folks volunteer for this event! You can see that they are proud of their community and want to be involved.”
