I am so pleased to once again be able to write to the people of East Providence. And I am once again asking you to vote in the upcoming elections.
I ask this for a couple of reasons. Voting is critically important to our democracy. It is we, as citizens, who elect those who will lead our community, state and nation.
Ours is a representative form of government. Our elected officials represent us. That only works if we vote into office those officials who will represent our own interests.
And, for all of the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, voting sets an example for the children. The second reason for requesting your voting in this election is the two referenda on this year’s ballot that have implications for the East Providence schools.
Question 4 for East Providence voters is a referendum on bonding the renovations and expansion of Martin Middle School, Martin Pre-K and renovation of Waddington Elementary. Question 2 on the statewide referenda, is to allow the State to provide additional funding and reimbursements to districts, such as East Providence updating school facilities.
As an employee of East Providence, I cannot tell you to vote for or against any ballot issue. However, I would implore you to vote. Your vote will tell the leadership of East Providence in which direction you want the City move.
Thank you. It has been an honor and privilege to have served as your superintendent of schools these last seven years.
— Crowley is the former Superintendent of the East Providence School Department.
