Crowell, Lewis tie for final seat in Little Compton Budget Committee race

Final term expected to be filled by town council later this month

Members of the Little Compton Town Council will decide who fills the last of three budget committee seats, after incumbent George Crowell and challenger Scott W. Lewis tied for third place in non-partisan town elections held at Tuesday's financial town meeting.

Voters on Tuesday sent Andrew Rhyne back to the committee for another two-year term, with 208 votes. Also elected was challenger Jennifer R. Flather, with 205. But Crowell, a member of the committee for more than 20 years, deadlocked with Lewis at 175 votes.

The town charter addresses how town meeting elections are to be held, but does not offer specific guidance in the case of a tie. However, town solicitor Anthony DeSisto said that in his opinion, state law requires the third seat to be appointed by the town council. Councilors are expected to meet on the matter Monday, June 30.

Board of Canvassers members spent Wednesday going over the ballots before posting results on the town's website Thursday, and reported that the board "has taken abundant care to count and recount the ballots to ensure no errors were made with the counts."

Candidates out of the running included Brandon E. Pineo (162 votes) and Kurt Ryan Peters (151 votes).

Beach commission

Samantha A. Snow and William Mackintosh III won two open beach commission seats with 229 and 207 votes, respectively. Finishing out of the running for four-year terms were Joseph D. Maiato with 193 votes, and Peter M. Petrarca with 52.
