Derby Day event parties into the night

The annual Derby Day Party will run neck and neck with the celebrations at Churchill Downs. Attend the full event, with a livestream of the Derby on the big screen, sitdown dinner of southern-inspired specialties and a live auction, or join the after-party immediately following with live music by the Down City Band under the big tent. Open bar, mint juleps and bourbon tastings. Prizes for best hat, best-dressed female, best-dressed male and best-dressed couple.

WHAT: Fifth annual Derby Day Party

WHEN: Saturday, May 6, from 5 to 11 p.m.

WHERE: Linden Place Mansion, 500 Hope St., Bristol

COST: Full event $150 per person (discounted tables of eight); Derby Night after-party tickets $75.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
