EAST PROVIDENCE — Law enforcement officials are deeming an odd occurrence on the fairways of the Agawam Hunt Club Friday evening, July 19, as a "mental health episode," which fortunately left no one injured and the golf course surprisingly with little damage.

According to East Providence Police Captain Michael Rapoza, the department's Operations Division Commander/ Public Information Officer, the incident occurred late Friday night when officers engaged a male driving a vehicle just as he was about to turn into the Agawam Hunt parking lot located on the east side of North Broadway in Rumford.

The report noted the vehicle crashed into an area of brush and trees a short distance from where he entered the course. The subject was not injured, but he was transported to the hospital to seek "other medical treatment."

The male faced the following criminal charges:
Reckless Driving/Eluding Police
Obstruction of an Officer
Vandalism (for the damage to the golf course)

He is also is being charged with civil violations, which include speeding and obedience to a stop sign.

The report of Agawam officials was a bit more expansive. The subject continued through the parking lot, heading east towards the 18th holes then back across towards the first and second holes nearer to North Broadway  and the aforementioned parking lot before crashing into the wood there where he was eventually apprehended by police.

The club credited superintendent Cody Laux and his staff for their efforts in the aftermath of the incident as well as the recent stretch of especially dry and hot weather for the maintaining the course in playable condition. The maintenance crew was able to roll out most of tire marks due to the firm condition of the turf.
