Eagles battle at golf states — finish fourth
Barrington boasts three players in the top-15
The Barrington High School golf team finished tied for fourth place at the state golf championship.
Held at Cranston Country Club on June 1 and 2, the championship featured a talented field of high school golfers.
Barrington’s Phoenix Inouye shot a 79 on the first day of the competition and a 75 on the second day, to finish in seventh place with a 154. Connor Sullivan had an 80 on the first day and a 76 on the second, and finished 11th with a 156, while Cole Vieira had a first day score of 75 and second day 81, finishing in 14th place with a 156.
Barrington was the only team to boast three players in the top-15 finishers.
Other Eagles to compete at the state championship were Ian McTaggart (86, 85 — 171), Sean Bonneau (84, 87 — 171), and Jackson Gorman (92, 80 — 172). Barrington finished with a team score of 630, tying them for fourth place with Moses Brown. Hendricken won with a score of 617, while East Greenwich was second at 623, and LaSalle was third with a 628.
Barrington High School Coach Dustin Walbridge said he was very pleased with his team’s effort.
“The goal was to go out and have fun, and play better the second day,” Coach Walbridge said, adding that the team accomplished its goal.
“It’s a great squad. They put their time in and it paid off.”
Coach Walbridge said Phoenix Inouye has been a very steady player who has aspirations of playing professional golf one day.
“He’s been working hard,” Coach Walbridge said.
The BHS coach said Cole Vieira is a sophomore who has been working very hard at his game, and shows an impressive ability to hit his irons.
“He hits a lot of greens,” Coach Walbridge said. “He gave it his all. His putts just didn’t fall.”
Coach Walbridge also praised senior golfers Connor Sullivan and Jackson Gorman.
The Eagles’ first-year coach said he enjoyed working with the team this season and said next year’s team looks to be very strong. He said there a number of players on the practice squad who are doing well. He also said there is some talent in the group of current eighth-graders.
