Barrington squares off against Hendricken in head-to-head finals

The Barrington High School boys swim team gave Hendricken all it could handle in the Division I State Championship, before falling to the Hawks 64-30 on Saturday.

This year’s championship was a head-to-head competition, pitting Barrington against Hendricken. Most years, the state championship features a number of swimmers and teams from across the state.

The Eagles opened the meet with a stellar showing in the 200 medley relay. Lucas Jauregui, Max LaRoche, Will McClelland and Jackson Bennett teamed up to win the event with a time of 1:36.87. Barrington also had a second team in the event — Gavin Nelson, Gavin Lesk, David McMillan and Chris Silveira partnered to finish third.

McClelland also celebrated a first place finish in the 100 butterfly — clocking a time of 51.03. Barrington High School Swim Coach Sandy Gorham said Will’s time was the fastest in the state this year in that event.

“He was unbelievable,” Coach Gorham said.

LaRoche won the 100 breaststroke and finished third in the 200 IM.

The Eagles had two other relay teams place second in their events: The 400 free relay and the 200 free relay — both relay teams featured McMillan, Bennett, Kellan Lane and McClelland.

Lane finished second in the 200 free, and was third in the 100 free. Barrington’s 200 free relay team of Silveira, Colby Snow, Zack O’Connor and Alex McClelland finished third.

“Our B relays beat all their B relays,” Coach Gorham said, adding that the final score would have likely been much closer if the meet had been held as it is most years with numerous teams in attendance.

Coach Gorham also said this marked the seventh time Barrington has finished second to Hendricken in the state finals. He said Barrington High School is easily the best public school team in the state.
