Eagles finish sixth at wrestling state championship

The Barrington High School wrestling team finished sixth at the state championship last weekend. The Eagles scored 147.5 points. First place Hendricken finished with 278 points. 

James Rocco led the way for the Eagles. Rocco won the 150-pound weight class, defeating Mt. Hope’s Anthony Lombardi in the finals, 16-5. 

Following is a breakdown of Barrington’s other wrestlers at states:

• 106 pounds: Hayden Genetti finished fourth

• 115 pounds: Logan Medeiros finished fifth

• 126 pounds: Aidan Mantooth finished eighth

• 132 pounds: Gavin Munzert finished sixth

• 138 pounds: Owen DiOrio finished fifth

• 144 pounds: Caleb Appleyard finished fifth

• 157 pounds: Kaleo Pan finished 10th

• 165 pounds: Connor Foley finished sixth

• 175 pounds: Gianni DiGioia finished ninth

• 190 pounds: Brandon Medeiros finished fourth

• 285 pounds: Gunner Haas finished eighth

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
