The Barrington High School girls basketball team shot 15.5 percent from the floor, scored only three points in the first half, and lost to Ponaganset 39-20 in the Division I semifinals on Friday night, Feb. 28.
Barrington Coach Stephen Lenz praised his team’s effort throughout the game, but acknowledged that the shots were just not falling for the Eagles.
“We had really good run-outs,” Lenz said. “But we were 3-for-20 on left-handed layups.”
The Eagles scored one point in the first quarter, but only trailed 2-1 against the Chieftains. Ponaganset’s offense picked up in the second quarter, while Barrington’s continued to struggle. The Eagles trailed 15-3 at halftime.
Barrington scored a quick basket at the start of the second half, but Ponaganset answered with a long-range three-pointer and never looked back.
Lenz said his team never let up, despite the shooting struggles. He said their confidence may have been impacted by the sluggish offensive start.
“It was not just one person,” he said.
Lauren Kilpatrick and Riley Graveline led the Eagles with six points each.
The Eagles will look to get back on track this Friday night when they host St. Raphael’s Academy in the Sweet 16 matchup of the State Open Tournament. The game tips off at 6 p.m.
