The Eagles are headed to the state championship finals.

The Barrington High School girls tennis team defeated East Greenwich 4-1 in a Division 1 semifinal showdown on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The win advanced the top-seeded Eagles into the state finals where they will play against the winner of the North Kingstown vs. LaSalle Academy match.

Barrington showed its ability to overcome adversity in the semifinals. The Eagles headed into the match without their number two singles player Sadie Spector, and needed to shift the lineup.

Anna Pani, normally the number three singles player, moved into the number two singles spot, while Charlotte Byon played up one spot at number three singles. Addy Friedman has played doubles all season, but slid into the number four singles position. Friedman normally plays doubles with Jasmine Malik, but Jillian Frechette stepped into that role.

Ava Koczera-Kasem remained at number one singles.

Koczera-Kasem won her match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Byon won 6-2, 6-4, and Friedman won 6-0, 6-1. Malik and Frechette finished off the team victory with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

“The girls were so focused and played so well, so proud of everyone stepping to the plate and playing up,” said BHS Coach Polly Danyla.

The state championship finals will be played on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Slater Park at 11 a.m.
