The Barrington High School baseball team's storybook run through the Division II playoffs came to an end on Wednesday afternoon, June 12, as the Eagles lost their second straight game to Mount St. Charles.

The Eagles, who fell 3-2 in extra innings in Game 1, faced a must-win situation in Game 2. The Mounties took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Barrington battled back to score two runs and tie the game 2-2 in the fourth inning. 

In the top of the fifth inning, the Mounties loaded the bases. Barrington's Sam Tanous made a nice play on a grounder to shortstop, throwing to first for one out. The Eagles' first baseman then tried to cut down the runner heading home, but an errant throw allowed the Mounties to score the go-ahead run. Mount St. Charles scored another run in the fifth, and one more in the seventh.

Meanwhile the Eagles were unable to build a comeback, losing the game 5-2.

"We just couldn't hit after that," said Barrington coach Vin Scandura.

Despite the loss, the Eagles' coach was very proud of his team's effort in the Division II championship series, which was played at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket.

"It was really good to see the kids step up and embrace the moment," he said. "The moment was never too big for them."

Following the game, Coach Scandura thanked the senior members of the team, and encouraged next year's returning players to use this experience as motivation to improve in the off-season. 

The Eagles' leader also took a moment to thank his team — "It's also been a great experience for me. I never played at McCoy. I had never had the chance to coach at McCoy. It was fantastic… There is no better venue for a (high school) state championship than McCoy Stadium."

Barrington finished the season with a 14-12 record overall. The Eagles defeated Prout 2 games to 1 in the Division II semifinals, and eliminated Mt. Hope and Westerly in earlier round games.
