Eagles pound out 12-8 win over Westerly in softball

The Barrington High School softball team split against tough competition last week.

The Eagles opened the week with a 12-8 victory against Westerly and then dropped a 6-1 decision to St. Raphael’s Academy.

Barrington’s offense overpowered Westerly. Maya Etheridge led the attack with a home run for the Eagles, while Ruby Ciummo, Ace McCoy, Cora Floriani and Gianna Bruccato also had key contributions. Barrington Coach Sandy Gorham said Bruccato ripped two triples and drove in a pair of runs, while Ciummo had a pair of hits and McCoy, batting in the leadoff spot, went 2-for-2 with two walks.

Gorham said Floriani, a freshman, is batting .591 this season. He has also been impressed with her play at the shortstop position.

“Cora is truly outstanding,” Gorham said. “You know, there are some things a coach can’t teach.”

Gorham said Floriani’s softball IQ is off-the-charts, and she is a very instinctive player. He said she will regularly make difficult plays in the field.

“We started three freshmen,” Gorham said, referring to Floriani, Bruccato and standout outfielder Grace Fontaine. “They did fabulous… they’re well-schooled. They’ve got great skills.”

The win over Westerly avenged an earlier lopsided loss to the Bulldogs.

Barrington also squared off against St. Raphael’s last week, falling 6-1. Gorham said the game was closer than the score dictated — the Eagles gave up three unearned runs in the first inning and had a hard time clawing back against the Saints. A big part of that was the St. Raphael’s pitcher.

“They have a great pitcher. She’s the best we’ve faced all season,” he said. “She was fast. And her change-up was so good.”

The Eagles will face three tough tests in the upcoming week. Barrington plays at East Greenwich on Wednesday, at Portsmouth on Friday, and will face Lincoln High School on Monday.

Barrington’s record is 8-3.
