The Barrington High School boys soccer team pushed its record to 2-3-2 after splitting a pair of games in New York at the Firebird Invitational Tournament at Kellenberg Memorial High School in New York last weekend.

The Eagles opened the tournament with a 4-1 loss to Kellenberg, but bounced back for an 8-0 victory against St. John the Baptist. 

“I think it was great. We had a great time,” said BHS Coach Don Denham. “The whole idea is bonding and getting to know each other.”

In addition to playing two games, the Barrington High School team also had the chance to take in a Columbia University men’s soccer game on Saturday night. Following the game, the BHS team was invited onto the field to meet the Columbia players. 

“It was so much fun. The kids were great. They had a great attitude,” Coach Denham said. 

The Eagles had plenty of scoring chances against Kellenberg, but only converted on one. Logan Lane buried a crossing pass into the back of the Kellenberg net. 

Meanwhile, the Eagles worked hard to limit a Kellenberg forward who stands 6-foot-4 and is very athletic, said Denham. 

“They’re a very good team,” Denham added. “Same level as Hendricken and LaSalle Academy.”

Denham said he was able to get all of his players into the game against Kellenberg. 

In the second game, Barrington squared off against St. John the Baptist and took an early 2-0 lead. The Eagles were awarded two penalty kicks in the first 10 minutes — one on a handball infraction and the second on a high kick. Barrington’s Aden Memoli buried the first penalty kick. The Eagles’ second PK was initially blocked, but in the scramble that followed, Evan Memoli ripped the ball into the back of the St. John’s net. 

Other Eagles to score included Lane, Cole Ornstedt, Beck Capizzo and Kevin Yang. Tristan Gilfillan scored two goals in the lopsided victory.

A few days before the trip to New York, Barrington hosted Portsmouth and tied 1-1. Veer Rege scored the lone Barrington goal. 

Denham said the Eagles had other scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize. 

“We have those chances. We just need to put it in the back of the net,” he said. 

Barrington was scheduled to play against Moses Brown on Tuesday night.
