East Providence's Morrison wins Classical Classic boys' 200 meters

Senior Nick Morrison’s victory in the boys’ 200 meter race highlighted East Providence High School’s participation in the annual Classical Classic outdoor track and field meet held at Conley Stadium in Providence Saturday, April 30.

Morrison clocked a 23.23 to post the best time of the two heats and bettering the second place run of 23.32 by Darian Griffin of Rogers, who was in the same heat. Five of the top seven times came from the Morrison heat, including the fourth best of 23.69 by fellow Townie Yusef Abdullah and the seventh best of 23.8 posted by East Providence’s Kitwana Ruddock.

Morrison also ran seventh individually in the 400 with a time of 52.45. North Kingstown’s John Schultz won the event in 50.89.

Other solo results of note for EPHS included the third place height of 5 feet, 10 inches by sophomore Kenaz Ochgwu in the high jump. Ochgwu was edged for second on attempts by Smithfield senior Jaden Saunders. St. Raphael junior Ethan McCann-Carter won the event by clearing 6 feet even.

In addition, Townie senior Denzy Suazo shared fifth place in the 300 hurdles with LaSalle’s Trevor Kessler, each clocking times of 45.261. North Smithfield senior Matthew Stamatelatos won in 40.1.

EPHS also had a pair of notable results in the relays. Morrison, Abdullah, Ruddock and Max Whiting teamed to placed third in the 4x100 with a 44.77. LaSalle won in 43.59 and Barrington was second in 44.26. In the 4x4, Morrison, Whiting, Suazo and David Vieira were fourth in 3:40.05. Portsmouth won in 3:35.65 followed by South Kingstown with a 3:35.83 and Westerly with a 3:39.78.

Freshman Nazarae Phillip had the best result from the EPHS girls’ contingent, finishing third in the 200 meters with a time of 27.23. Phillip’s time was tops in her heat. Cranston West soph Ailani Sutherland won her heat and the event in 26.15 followed by Cumberland senior Eden Gutierrez in second with a 27.11.

Phillip and Townie sophomore Kandace Daniel narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 100 dash final, running 11th (13.45) and 10th (13.41), respectively. The eighth and final qualifying time was 13.36.

Phillip and Daniel were joined by Samantha Clarke and Giselle Raphael to finish fourth in the 4x1 relay with a time of 51.5. Cranston West won in 48.67 followed by Classical (50.65) and Central (51.44).

The EPHS quartet of Gladys Barrera, Katherene Diaz-Araujo, Michelle Diaz-Araujo and Navaeh Lanois did their mates one better, finishing third in the 4x800 relay with a 10:54.17. Portsmouth won in 10:24.89 with Coventry second in 10:49.53.

Other local girls’ notes of interest included three top finishes by St. Mary Academy-Bay View junior Francine Miller, who ran second in the 800 (2:24.54) to Cumberland’s Grace Carr (2:18.61) and third in the 400 (1:02.29). Miller, Sophia DiChiaro, Simone Miranda and Payton Sullivan also ran sixth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:44.22. In the field for the Bengals, junior Suraily Sam was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 33’9.25.” Weeko Thompson of Chariho won the event with a 37’4.”
