Elizabeth M. Reid, 100, of Barrington

Elizabeth M. “Bette” Reid passed away Monday, June 7, 2021, at the age of 100, a goal she was determined to reach. Wife of the late Robert F. Reid, an educator in town, she resided in Barrington since the late 1940’s. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Maude Tytus and was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters. At the time of her death, she was a resident at the Hattie Ide Chaffee home in East Providence. 

Bette is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Carolyn Reid Materne and Douglas Materne, three treasured grandsons - Steven, David, and Thomas, and seven great-grandchildren - Raelin, Brian, Beatrice, Elizabeth, Thomas, Andrew, and Henry, along with many nieces and nephews. She always felt truly blessed to have all of her family living here in Barrington allowing her to enjoy all the milestones and celebrations of her grandchildren’s and their families’ lives.

A private burial was held at Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington with a Celebration of Life being held on Wednesday, June 16 at the Barrington Yacht Club on Barton Avenue in Barrington.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory and sent to Hope Health Hospice, 1085 North Main Street, North Providence, RI 02904.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
