Enjoy a fort — in the backyard

Posted

Many kids love using blankets to build forts inside the house — but why not take that fun outside? Try letting the kids create a backyard fort using the same concept (maybe with older blankets that can stand to get a little dirty). On a nice day, have them set up the fort and let them enjoy reading a book, playing a game, or having a snack in their cozy outdoor hideaway. Just like with indoor forts, the best part is often the process of building it.

Materials

Old blankets or large sheets

Clothespins or clips to secure blankets

Chairs, broomsticks, or other sturdy outdoor furniture or objects to create structure

Cushions or pillows for comfort

A picnic blanket (optional)

Snacks, books, or games (optional, for fun!)

Instructions

1. Find a flat, shaded area in the backyard with enough space to build. Make sure the ground is dry.

2. Lay down a picnic blanket to sit on.

3. Use chairs, sticks, or other stable objects as the main supports. Place them in a circle or square to form the fort’s structure.

4. Hang old blankets or sheets over the frame to form walls and a roof. Secure the corners with clothespins or clips to keep them from blowing away.

5. Place pillows or cushions inside the fort to make it cozy.

6. Bring in books, board games and snacks.

Note: Remember, the fun is just as much in the building as it is in the relaxing afterward!
