CRANSTON — At the 2021 Rhode Island Interscholastic League boys’ state championship event held Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2 and 3, at Cranston Country Club, EPHS junior Michael Wetmore finished in a tie for ninth in the individual competition.

Wetmore carded an opening round 80 to make the cut on the number, then returned to shoot a four-over par 75 to finish with a 155 total. He shared ninth with Pilgrim’s Joel Speel, who shot rounds of 72 and 83.

LaSalle freshman Max Jackson shot matching rounds of 1-under par 70 to claim the individual title. He was seven shots better than runner up Jake Trimble of Burrillville (77-70-147) and eight ahead of Jack McMullen of East Greenwich (74-74-148).

In the team competition Ricky Angeli finished fourth (72-77-149) to lead Bishop Hendricken to the state title. The Hawks claimed their first championship since 2017 with a four-player total of 617 over two rounds. East Greenwich was second at 623, LaSalle third at 628 with Barrington and Moses Brown sharing fourth at 630.

The Hawks, runners up the last time the state championship was contested in 2019 following its cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic, placed two other individuals in the top 15 (seventh and T15). Their fourth scorer did not make the solo cut, but would have finished in a share of 15th (157 total) had he did.

Twenty-five players made it on the number into Day 2 of the individual event. EPHS senior Kyle Duggan was the lone other Townie to qualify for states. He missed the cut after carding a 90.

In other championship news, Bay View’s Brooke Brennan, playing on her par 69 home course at Warwick Country Club, won the 2021 RIIL girls’ individual state golf competition as the senior carded an 82 in the single-round event played May 25.

Brennan was three shots better than Moses Brown’s Kylie Eaton and five shots ahead of Wheeler’s Ayoung Lee.

Bay View's Morgan MacLeod shared fifth after shooting 90. Teammates Hannah Wishtischin finished 13th with a 110 score and Katherine Waldorf 19th with a 116.
