Westport ace Luke Finglas struck out 7 and pitched a complete game as the baseball team beat Boston International 4-2 in the D-5 Round of 32 at home on Monday afternoon. The senior allowed just 1 hit, 4 walks and 2 runs in 7 innings.
"Luke was unbelievable out there," said head coach Kenny Tocci. "He’s been like Atlas all year long. He worked out of many tough situations. There wasn't a lot of room for error in a tight game like that.”
The win improved the 12 seeded Wildcats record to 15-6.
Finglas also received heroic help from right fielder Joey Guild in the fifth inning. With a runner on and the Wildcats clinging to a 4-2 lead, Guild ranged to his right and leap to snare a sharply hit ball to the gap. He somersaulted and came up showing the umpire the ball in his glove as the Wildcats celebrated his inning ending play.
"The team showed mental toughness and we persevered in finding a way to win a game that wasn’t going our way," Coach Tocci said.
Offense finding ways to win
The offense has been finding ways to win with their timely hitting all season and this game was more of the same as Westport scored all of their 4 runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.
The Wildcats loaded the bases, taking advantage of walks and some timely hits. Max Gallant and Connor James both scored to knot the game at 2-2.
Second baseman Jacob Aurelio, who knocked in Gallant scored the winning run from third base on an RBI hit by Jack Valton. Aurelio slid under the tag of the Blue Terriers catcher to put Westport up 3-2.
"Jacob's slide was unbelievable," said Coach Tocci. "That’s as good a play as I’ve ever seen."
Guild added an insurance run on a fielder's choice RBI by Kingston Cordeiro.
"It’s been a microcosm of our season," Coach Tocci said. "We do what needs to be done. Tip your hat to their pitcher. He was effectively wild making it hard on us. We made enough adjustments to get what we needed.”
Next up: The Wildcats play at Ware at 7 p.m. On Wednesday.
