The Barrington High School boys basketball team sprinted out to a 21-9 first quarter lead against Westerly on Wednesday night, Dec. 21, and never looked back. The Eagles extended their lead to 33-16 by halftime and won 56-43.

Barrington High School Coach Mike Raffa was pleased with his team’s effort, especially on the defensive end of the court.

“The defense set the tone tonight and Dan Coogan and Evan Anderson continue to shut our opponents down,” Raffa said.

Matt Raffa and Nick Scandura led the Eagles’ offense. The two juniors combined to score 31 points — Raffa knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished with 16, while Scandura hit one three-pointer and finished with 15. Senior guard Sean Bonneau scored six points in the second half and finished with eight for the game.

“Coogan made plays late for us and finished with 5 points,” said Coach Raffa. “Anderson added 4. Owen Pfeffer chipped in with 3 points. Spencer Proulx hit a dagger 3 in the fourth quarter to get us over the hump and seal the win.”

Matt Leonard rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a baseline jumper in the first quarter.

Barrington improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the previously undefeated Bulldogs fell to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in Division I play.

“It felt like a gauntlet with five games in eight days and three games over the last four days, but the challenge allowed us to get better and grow as a team,” Coach Raffa said. “The Central loss could have had a carry-over affect, but these young men have shown great resilience and mental toughness.”

Barrington will play next in the East Bay Holiday Basketball Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28.
