A recount Wednesday failed to change the outcome and Steven Ouellette is still the leading vote-getter in the 8th Bristol Representative race — all that’s left is for the state to certify the results.
Ouellette, a Westport Democrat, beat runner-up Christopher Thrasher, in the Nov. 5 general election for the seat being vacated by outgoing Rep. Paul Schmid. The district covers all of Westport, and parts of Fall River, New Bedford, Freetown and Acushnet. There were three other candidates for the seat, but hopefuls Manuel Soares and Laura Hadley of Westport, and Jesse St. Gelais, of Acushnet, finished well down in the running.
After the election, Thrasher requested a recount in Westport’s Precinct E, where a machine malfunction on election day slowed the line briefly whil poll workers removed and replaced it.
Originally, Ouellette received 1,009 to Thrasher’s 766 in that precinct, including provisional and overseas ballots. Following Wednesday’s manual recount at the Westport Police Department, the numbers didn’t change much — 1,012 for Ouellette, and 765 for Thrasher.
Westport Town Clerk Kristin Stinson was expected to send Westport’s results to the state for certification.
