Guard Julia George scored 14 points as the Westport girls basketball team held on to edge Randolph 39-38 in a non-league home game on Friday night.

The win was the Wildcats’ fourth straight as they improve their record to 4-1.

“It was a hard fought win,” said head coach Jen Gargiulo. “The girls played really tough defense down the stretch. I was very proud of them.”

Randolph ran out to an 8-0 lead before George and the Wildcats found their groove. She buried a 3-pointer and put in a layup on a fast break for 5 first quarter points. Then buried another three and added two more layups to lead Westport in a 18 point second quarter that led to a 27-21 halftime lead.

Senior center Jenna Egbe played solidly under the hoop with 8 points, 11 rebounds, a block and a steal. Senior guard Zoey Sylvain buried a pair of 3-pointers in the middle quarters for six of her 8 points. She also grabbed 5 boards and 2 steals. Senior guard Tess Silvia scored 5 points and hit the floor several times chasing after loose balls and tracking down the Randolph point guard. Sophomore guard Kylie Hazel added 3 points and freshman Sophie Rego scored 2.

Westport clung to a 36-30 at the start of the third quarter. A George jumper and a Sylvain free throw was all the offense they were able to muster as the Wildcats fought defensively to maintain their lead.
