Gilberto Costa Leste, 87, of Bristol

Gilberto Costa Leste, 87, of Kingswood Road, Bristol, passed away on Aug. 23, 2021, at Rhode Island Hospital.  He was the husband of Maria Julieta (Costa) Leste.

Born in Aqua do Pau, St. Michael, Portugal, he was son of the late Manuel and Maria deLurdes (Costa) Leste. In addition to his wife Maria, he is survived by his children:  Edward Leste PPD and his wife Pamela; Gilbert Leste, Jr. and his wife Mary Lou; and Anna Martin and her husband Patrick. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Ashley Leste and her fiancé Michael Marley; Nicole Leste and her partner Vincent St. Angelo; Kyle Leste, Alexandra Leste, Raquel Leste, Sean Martin, Joshua Martin and Alana Martin. He was the brother of Fernanda Costa, Normanda Medeiros and the late Jose Leste and Manuel Leste. He was the brother-in-law of Ana Leste and Inez Leste.

Mr. Leste was educated in Portugal, where he was an electrician and barber at trade. After coming to America in 1968, he was employed by Rico Manufacturing before retiring. He adored spending time with his grandchildren, family holidays and gatherings.

He enjoyed yard work, gardening and always liked to help his children with projects. He loved his daily drive through Colt State Park and will miss all of his friends at the Mosaico Park. He loved his grand fur babies Guinness, Sam, Stella, Nova, Marco, Nyla, Lucy and Bently.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
