The Westport girls basketball team extended their undefeated streak to six games, after squashing Fairhaven 44-21, during a home game on Wednesday night. Sarah Perry continues to be an inside force for the Wildcats as she led the team in scoring with 15 points, pulled down five rebounds, blocked three shots and made a steal.

“Sarah was huge for us under the boards,” said head coach Jen Gargiulo. “The girls struggled to start offensively but their tenacious and relentless defense helped create offensive opportunities.”

Leah Sylvain made nine steals defensively for the Wildcats, sank three 3-pointers and scored 13 points. “Leah played outstanding defense resulting in nine turnovers,” said Coach Gargiulo. “Fairhaven has a smart coach and three talented seniors. They made us work for every basket.”

Westport started the game off slow and made uncharacteristic turnovers in the first quarter, but still managed to take a 14-6 lead. Perry scored 8 of her 15 points with a three pointer. Korynne Holden scored 4 of her 7 points. The talented junior made 5 steals and pulled down 4 rebounds and tallied two assists during the game. Tess Sylvia added a basket in the quarter.

Sylvain drained two of her 3-pointers in the second quarter. Junior center Meghan Malloy led the team with 8 rebounds and added a 2 of her 7 points as the Wildcats took a 22-10 lead at halftime.

Perry and Sylvain each scored 7 points in the second half, Malloy netted 5 points and Holden added a 3-pointer.

“The girls rallied around each other and played together,” said Coach Gargiulo. “It’s a mark a of good team to persevere and push their teammates to work hard when not everything is going right.”

Westport will host Southeastern RVT on Tues. Jan.17 at 6:30 p.m. in a non league game before starting league play at West Bridgewater on Friday Jan. 20 at 5 p.m.
