Good news: Rezendes is back as Westport topples Avon 47-19

The Westport girls basketball game toppled Avon 47-19 in a league home game on Thursday night. The win was the Wildcat’s fourth straight as they improve their record to 10-3. Every Wildcat scored during the game, which at times resembled a junior varsity contest.

The best news from the game was that sophomore Skylar Rezendes has managed to work her way back to the court, after suffering a leg injury in Westport’s first game of the season. The talented scorer had been holding a clipboard and pen during games until playing at Holbrook on Tuesday.

“Skylar has really stepped up this season,” said head coach Jen Gargiulo, “She looks great and It’s super exciting to have her back.”

Adding Rezendes to starters, Jenna Egbe, Zoey Sylvain, Julia George, Tess Silvia and Kylie Hazel, will give the Wildcats another legit scorer as they begin to look towards the tournament with seven games left to the regular season.

“Even when she was out, she was a leader at practices and games,” added Coach Gargiulo. “It’s a testament to her character. She pushes herself every minute of every practice and is a leader for the other players.”

Egbe, the Wildcats’ senior center, led Westport with 9 points against Avon, all which came in the first quarter as the Wildcats pummeled the Falcons 24-2. Tess Silvia buried a 3-pointer and a jumper for 5 points, Rezendes netted 3, Sylvain, Molly Costa, Kylie Hazel each scored 2 and Julia George added a free throw.

After the blow out first quarter, the Wildcats cruised the rest of the way, rotating in the entire lineup. Costa, a tall forward, spelled Egbe in the paint, rebounded well and scored 8 points. Off the bench, Ava Croteau scored 4, Luana Silveira sank a 3-pointer, Emily Sowersby, Brooke Crocker, Alexis Vieira, Sophia Rego and Jenna George each scored 2 points.

Westport, who currently has a power ranking of 17, will have an opportunity to move up in the rankings as they play a pair of games against D-4 Blue Hills. The Wildcats will also play Case, Wareham, Bishop Stang, Randolph and Fairhaven.

Next up: The Wildcats host Blue Hills on Monday at 5 p.m. then travel to Case on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Wareham on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
