An elementary school in Barrington received a shout-out in Governor Dan McKee’s state of the state speech on Tuesday night, Jan. 14.

McKee spent time discussing education during his annual speech and referenced Providence school Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, which became the first Providence school to earn a National Blue Ribbon award.

McKee followed that up with: “MLK, along with Garvin Memorial Elementary in Cumberland and Sowams Elementary in Barrington, were three of only 356 schools selected for this esteemed award out of more than 115,000 schools nationwide.”

Barrington officials announced in Sept. 2024 that Sowams School had achieved the Blue Ribbon.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Principal Jim Callahan and the entire Sowams community for this outstanding achievement,” wrote Barrington Superintendent of Schools Rob Wargo in a district-wide email at that time.

“Sowams School is committed to fostering a supportive and academically rigorous learning environment where every student can thrive. Sowams’s recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School is a testament to that commitment and to the hard work and dedication of our students, educators, staff, and families, who put forth their best effort every day.”

Sowams School, which services students in kindergarten through third grade, is the fourth Barrington school to receive a National Blue Ribbon award. Nayatt School, Barrington Middle School and Barrington High School have also been selected as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
