Grid: Mylar balloon caused outage in Warren, Bristol
The power outage that left thousands of residents in Warren and Bristol last Friday was caused by a mylar balloon, according to National Grid.
The outage occurred just before 8 a.m., when the wayward ballon struck a transformer near Metacom Ave, shorting out power to a large swath of Warren and extending into parts of northern Bristol.
In all, some 3,400 customers lost power, National Grid said. The power was back on within an hour and a half.
Rep. Susan Donovan (D-Dist. 69, Bristol, Portsmouth) last year proposed legislation that would ban the intentional release of balloons into the air, citing their impact on marine animals and the environment.
