Helen Powell Elder, 98, Barrington

Helen Powell Elder, 98, of Barrington, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015.

Mrs. Elder was born in Manchester, England, and was the daughter of Henry and Helen Powell. She served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service during World War II and was married to the late James Page Elder for more than 60 years.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Jane Baird; her children, Robert, John, Charles and Mary; her grandchildren, Colin, Hattie, Emily and Elizabeth; and several great grandchildren.

Mrs. Elder served as a Boy Scout den mother and volunteered for many years with Encore, the thrift shop of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington.

A service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11:30 a.m. at the Historic Chapel at Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Save the Bay. Visit smithmason.com for online condolences and service information.
