The Mt. Hope High School wrestling squad finished off a busy opening stretch to its 2024-25 schedule by placing second in the Huskies' own Sharon Lombardo Wrestling tournament held Saturday, Dec. 21, in Bristol.
Results for the locals included: Logan Sousa first at 106 pounds, Michael Bouchard fourth at 113, Michael Siravo sixth at 120, Eli Francis fourth at 126, Ethan Martel first at 138, Kyle McCarthy first place at 144, Anthony Lombardi third at 150, Nick Rogers first at 165 and Colin Maloney third at 215.
The Huskies compiled 222 points to finish as the runners-up to Natick, Mass., which won the title with 251.5. Middleborough, Mass., was third with 203.5. Martel won the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for the event.
Earlier in the week, Mt. Hope defeated Coventry 52-30 and lost to Scituate 36-32 in a regular season tri-meet. Among the highlights for the locals was McCarthy defeating Scituate senior Aidan Baker via a 14-1 Major Decision. McCarthy previously lost to Baker via technical fall at the South County Invitational Tournament. Baker is currently ranked 10th in New England on Schwartz Report rankings at 144.
The Huskies opened their 2024-25 season the previous weekend with an eighth place finish at the aforementioned South County Invitational hosted by North Kingstown and held Saturday, Dec. 14.
Mt. Hope tallied 141.5 points. LaSalle won the tournament with 220.5 points. Scituate was second with 212.5 and South Kingstown third with 197.5.
Lombardi, at 150, and Bouchard, at 113, led the locals as each finished third. Lombardi pinned Scituate's Aiden Grover Foster at 3:27 in the consolation final. Bouchard, likewise, was a pin-fall winner over SK's Ryan Cantino in 1:42.
The Huskies return to action Friday, Dec. 27, and Saturday, Dec. 28, participating in the 2024 Marshfield (Mass.) Holiday Tournament.
