The Mt. Hope High School basketball teams each split a pair of outings competing in tournaments during the Christmas break.

The boys edged Middletown, 59-55, then dropped a 61-33 decision to Moses Brown in the East Bay Holiday Tournament played both in Portsmouth and Barrington.

Against the Islanders, the locals couldn't shake Middletown, but stayed out in front for the better part of the contest.

Maleaq Roderick led Mt. Hope with 15 points. Lucas Andreozzi and Matt MacDougall netted a dozen each. Jack Thompson added eight.

The Huskies, like a lot of teams locally, could do little to stop Moses Brown star Donovan Clement as the 6-foot-5 junior netted a game-best 23 points in the Quakers' one-sided, 28-point win.

Clement, who is considered a Division I college prospect, added three rebounds as well as a couple of assists and steals onto his stat line.

The Huskies actually led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but eventually trailed 33-21 at intermission and 43-29 heading into the final frame.

Andreozzi led Mt. Hope with 12. Roderick had 10 and Ben Peters chipped in six. Senior Pat Cranson went for an impressive game-best 34 to pace all scorers. The 5-foot-11 guard made 14 field goals, all twos, and added six free throws.

The Huskies (2-2 overall) return to action at home Friday night, Jan. 3, when Tiverton comes to Bristol for a 6:30 tip.

The Mt. Hope girls also went 1-1 while participating in the Ocean State Classic Holiday Tournament hosted by Coventry.

Mt. Hope opened the event with a 40-36 loss to Exeter-West Greenwich in a game that remained close throughout. The Knights led 8-6 at the end of one period, then 16-10 at intermission. Center Emily Moran accounted for all of the locals' points in the first half.

In the second half, Lilly DaSilveira caught fire for Mt. Hope, scoring all of her game-best 18 points over the final 16 minutes. It wasn't enough, however, to help the locals overcome a more balanced EWG attack. Moran finished with 16. Katherine Frawley's third quarter bucket was the only other hoop made by a local.

The Huskies rebounded to pick up a victory in the second contest, 45-24 over Burrillville. Mt. Hope raced to a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. DaSilveira and Moran led the locals with 15 points apiece. Frawley had eight, including a pair of 3s in the opening period.

Mt. Hope (2-3 overall) make a return trip to Coventry for a regularly scheduled Division II league game Thursday night, Jan. 2, at 6:30.
