The Mt. Hope High School boys' basketball team continued its impressive run of recent results as the Huskies won their fifth game in a row 66-46 victory over host Toll Gate in Warwick on January 15.

Mt. Hope couldn't shake the Titans for 16 minutes, leading 10-4 at the end of the first quarter and 20-16 at intermission.

But like they did in their previous outing also on the road against Juanita Sanchez in Providence, the Huskies opened up a working margin out of intermission. The locals took a 42-32 lead into the final frame en route to the comfortable win.

Matt MacDougall led all scorers with a game-best 16 for Mt. Hope, which improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in Division III with the victory. Maleaq Roderick added 13 while Lucas Andreozzi and Jack Thompson had a dozen each.

"The kids played hard and executed our gameplan, so I'm happy for the boys" said Mt. Hope head coach Jeff Grifka. "It's tough to win in that place. It was the first time for me as a coach, so it felt good."

The Huskies were coming off another impressive away win, 65-44 over Division II Sanchez in a cross-league contest with the host Cavaliers on January 9.

The game followed a similar pattern. The locals by just three (16-13) after the opening eight minutes and an even smaller two (26-24) at the intermission before they exploded in the third period to blow the game open, 44-31, heading into the fourth. The third quarter featured a couple of nifty high-low exchanges between the Mt. Hope bigs, Thompson and Roderick. A MacDougall theft and feed to Thompson for a layup lifted the locals' lead to double figures (40-29) for the first time.

MacDougall and Roderick later trapped a Sanchez ballhandler at mid-court, leading to another steal and easy hoop by the former for the last bucket of the period. The Huskies blitzed the Cavs at the beginning of the final eight minutes to take complete command of the contest. Andreozzi started the onslaught with a triple. Roderick then scored consecutive baskets at the rim to make it 51-31, Mt. Hope's initial 20-point margin.

The same MacDougall and Roderick pairing later gave the locals their largest spread of the night (57-35) off yet one more steal by the latter and a lay-in by the former with just over three minutes remaining the game. Roderick led all scorers with 22 for the Huskies. Andreozzi had 18, Thompson had nine and MacDougall six.

The Huskies return home Friday night, Jan. 17, for a significant outing against visiting Ponaganset. The Chieftains enter the contest 7-0 against Division III opponents and 7-2 overall. Tip time is 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Mt. Hope girls' hoopsters also were working on a mini win streak, taking their last two outings including a 41-36 road win over Johnston.

Against the Panthers, the Huskies were without Emily Moran, their inside presence and fellow top scorer along with Lilly DaSilveira. Freshman Catherine Frawley shined in her counterpart's absence, scoring a season-best 12 points. DaSilveira was her usual terrific self with a game-best 15. Hailey Ferreira added seven and Maddy Butterworth five.

With Moran back in the fold, the Huskies had a much easier time against an overmatched Middletown also on the road January 13.

Mt. Hope shutout the Islanders in the first quarter, 15-0, and never looked back. Moran matched Middletown's total alone with a night-high 14 points. DaSilveira added 11. Frawley had eight, Ferreira five and Sophia Haberman four.

The Huskies improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in Division II with the victories.
