The Mt. Hope High School girls' volleyball team's recent run of fine play continued as the Huskies made it five wins on the trot to close the week following a 3-0 sweep of Juanita Sanchez Friday night, Oct. 11. The Huskies improved to 9-5 overall with the 25-17, 27-25, 25-12 victory.
Abby Allen had nine kills and made 13 serves, including three aces. Sarah Wilcox was even better at the line, making 14 serves with six aces while adding eight kills and nine digs.
"We’re still a little banged up, but different players have been stepping up at the right time," said MHHS head coach Lisa Lunney, whose Huskies are still missing some contributors. "It has not been an easy run. A few five-set matches that we gritted out until the last point, come from behind five-setters. I think we still get stuck in the middle for a bit, but we're figuring out how to finish for the win."
Girls' soccer
The MHHS girls' soccer team's recent slump continued with an 8-3 loss to host North Kingstown late last week. The sides played level at 2-all through the opening 40 minutes before the Skippers blitzed their guests with six goals in the second half.
Thea Jackson netted a hat-trick for the locals. Lilliana Redman and Kendra Ascoli each had an assist. Emily Moran made 17 saves. Mt. Hope dipped to 4-8-0 overall with the setbacks.
KMS soccer
The Kickemuit Middle School soccer teams, mirroring their older brethren at Mt. Hope High, were also in the midst of a substantial undefeated stretch to begin the season and that continued last week.
The junior Huskies each won three games during the span, including to finish off the stretch Friday, Oct. 11, when the KMS boys earned a 3-1 win over Portsmouth in Bristol, while the girls also earned a 2-1 decision on the road over Portsmouth
The latter victory for the girls was their 13th win without a loss or tie. Brooke Avila sandwiched a pair of goals for the locals around one by the host Patriots, who earlier in the season provided KMS with one of their other close contests. Avila's second came in the final 40 minutes to give the Huskies the win and clinched the top spot in the East Bay region regular season ranks.
In the boys' outing, the locals actually trailed 1-0 at the half before scoring three times out of intermission for the victory. Dominic Oliveira, Colin Kiselka and Gabriel Neagle accounted for the goals. Oliveira and Mason Reis had assists. Andrew Vieira made seven saves. KMS upped its record to 9-0-4 with the wins.
