Workers with East Coast Construction, the company tasked with replacing the Independence Park boat ramp and reconfiguring the adjacent parking lot, sink sheet piles to create a cofferdam. Once the cofferdam is in place, workers will pump the water out to allow for the installation of the new boat ramp, made from pre-cast concrete slabs. Once the ramp is finished, the dam will be removed, and water will flow back into the space.
Following the ramp reconstruction, work will continue in the parking area, including stormwater retention basins with sediment areas so that stormwater from the lot will filter into the ground instead of washing into the harbor. That will help the water quality in the harbor as well as reduce parking lot erosion over the long term.
Improvements will extend to the entrance of the parking lot and the end of the East Bay Bike Path, creating a safer and more aesthetically pleasing welcome to southbound cyclists.
The project is on track to be completed by the end of June.
